Agrovet Training - Kenya
This Project is now Completed for 2024!
So-called Agrovet stores are used throughout rural Kenya to provide one-stop shopping for goods and services for equine owners. These stores are often far from any major urban center. Imagine relying on your local farm and feed store for all your veterinary and animal care needs. Most of the staff operating these stores have never received any training in appropriate drug use or even simple veterinary diagnostic procedures. In Kenya, this is the norm.
A study carried out by Brooke East Africa found that 70% of equine owners rely on their local Agrovet whenever their animals are sick.
Wouldn’t you want to be sure that your horse or donkey is getting the correct treatment, especially when the cost might be a week’s earnings?
Agrovet practitioners lack any formal training and have no professional qualifications. We aim to change this.
Brooke USA’s project will train 120 Agrovet practitioners, including women, across two districts in Kenya, in up-to-date veterinary diagnosis, simple surgical procedures and drug use. This will allow sick and wounded animals to get safe and effective treatment at their local Agrovet store. This model increases the skills of community members and improves local resources while keeping the tradition of receiving care for their animals locally. This project has it all!
Every country Brooke USA works with has unique resources and deficits, varying cultural nuances, and its own traditions for animal handling. Our project in Kenya is another reflection of this country-specific model.
Thank you for your continued support! Stay tuned for upcoming projects.
