Planned giving is a type of charitable giving that allows you to leave a legacy gift to a nonprofit organization. A gift in your will can transform and inspire Brooke USA’s work worldwide, helping us fund expansion into new communities and countries to reach thousands more working horses, donkeys and mules each year… in your memory!

Planned gifts can be thoughtfully tailored to support both your loved ones and the causes closest to your heart. In addition to creating a lasting legacy for working horses, donkeys, and mules, these gifts may provide income for you or your heirs, offer valuable tax benefits, and simplify future financial planning. Options such as bequests in your will, gifts of life insurance or retirement assets, and charitable gift annuities allow you to combine your personal, financial, and charitable goals in a meaningful way. Arranged during your lifetime, planned gifts offer a flexible and compassionate way to make an enduring impact for generations to come.

As supporters of Brooke USA Foundation from its beginning, Eric and I considered it a natural progression to include this important charity in our estate plan. Ensuring the continued success of the many projects we have supported and safeguarding the success of those in the future is very important to us. And now, as a Board member at Brooke USA, I’ve come to personally experience the dedicated stewardship among both staff and Board members. Further assurance comes in the fact that Brooke USA has the highest rating for donor confidence. This gives us tremendous faith in investing a portion of our estate assets in such a responsibly run nonprofit. We are committed to supporting Brooke USA, today and beyond.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

Individuals can include Brooke USA as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, creating a lasting gift of compassion for working horses, donkeys, and mules around the world. You may also choose to make a gift of life insurance by naming Brooke USA as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a policy with cash value that is no longer needed.

Through a thoughtful gift like this, you help provide veterinary care, education, and protection for hardworking equines whose wellbeing is deeply connected to the families and communities they serve every day. In many cases, donors may also be eligible to claim a charitable deduction when gifting a life insurance policy with cash value. Because every situation is unique, we encourage you to consult your tax advisor to determine the deduction amount and benefits available to you.

Please let us know so we can show you our appreciation!

GIFTS OF STOCKS

Have you considered using appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares held long-term to support Brooke USA instead of making a cash donation? Gifts of appreciated securities can be a meaningful way to help working horses, donkeys, and mules receive the care and protection they deserve, while also offering potential financial benefits to you. In many cases, these gifts may help donors avoid tax liability on the appreciated value of stocks, bonds, or securities.

Your generosity helps Brooke USA support veterinary care, education, and sustainable programs that improve the lives of hardworking equines and the communities who depend on them every day. We encourage you to consult with your financial advisor before initiating a charitable gift arrangement to determine the best option for your individual circumstances.

Please email us at Emily.Dulin@BrookeUSA.org once a donation has been made, so we can make sure the donation posted to our account without error and is attributed to you (we typically do not receive donor information from the stockbroker). Of course, you’ll receive a thank you receipt soon after.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Many donors are choosing Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) as a thoughtful and flexible way to support the causes they care about most, including the lifesaving work of Brooke USA on behalf of working horses, donkeys, and mules. Established through financial institutions or community foundations, DAFs make it simple to recommend one-time or recurring grants to organizations like Brooke USA, while also offering potential tax advantages and ease of giving.

Beyond supporting urgent needs today, a DAF can also become part of your lasting legacy of compassion. Donors may choose to designate all or a portion of their remaining fund balance to Brooke USA, ensuring that even after their lifetime, hardworking equines continue to receive the care, protection, and dignity they deserve. This thoughtful choice helps extend your impact far into the future—supporting both animals and the communities that rely on them every day.

See https://www.brookeusa.org/donor-advised-funds for more information on DAFs.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION (QCD)

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a simple, meaningful, and tax-smart way to support Brooke USA using your IRA assets during your lifetime, while helping bring relief, care, and compassion to working horses, donkeys, and mules around the world. If you are age 70½ or older, you can make a direct gift from your IRA to Brooke USA and make an immediate difference in the lives of hardworking equines and the families who depend on them every day.

QCDs allow individuals to transfer up to $111,000 annually from an IRA directly to qualified charities without the distribution being counted as taxable income for federal tax purposes. For married couples, up to $222,000 may qualify. These gifts may also count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) beginning at age 73, offering both practical benefits and powerful impact.

By making a QCD, you can turn retirement savings into meaningful action—helping ensure that working animals receive the care, dignity, and protection they deserve for years to come.

A planned gift to Brooke USA helps safeguard the future of working equines. It can ensure that when natural disaster occurs, we’ll be ready to help, it will allow us to fund expansion into new communities, and if we experience downturns in the economy, it helps ensure we have the resources to continue our vital work in years to come.
