Improving Conditions for Working Equines at India’s Equine Fairs

INDIA’S EQUINE FAIRS ARE THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY EVER FOR YOU TO HELP WORKING ANIMALS.

Many working animals in India spend their lives exhausted, dehydrated, in agonizing pain and misery. From carrying bricks in brutally hot kilns to transporting heavy loads through immensely busy city roads. Brooke USA is committed to funding programs that improve their lives and welfare now and in the long run. But, with more than 1.2. million working equines in the country, we have a huge task ahead of us. These equine fairs, provide an important opportunity for us to reach hundreds of thousands of India’s suffering animals. We urgently need your support to help us fund these very much needed programs.

Unless you have seen an equine fair first-hand, it is almost impossible to understand just how awful they are and how much suffering prevails. Now, you can see for yourself these appalling fairs; just follow this link bit.ly/equinefairs to view our drone video view of the Dewa Equine Fair in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

The land is barren and dusty. The sun scorching. There is little shelter or clean water, and nothing around for miles. During the 68 equine fairs tended by Brooke India (there are more than 5,000 fairs across the country), 306,000 animals descend, brought by their owners to be traded and sold.

Some animals will travel many miles on foot, while others are crammed onto small trucks. Wedged in for hours, the frightened animals often panic. They kick and bite, resulting in fractures, broken bones, and horrendous wounds.

THESE POOR ANIMALS ARE ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED, AND THAT’S EVEN BEFORE THEY ARRIVE.

When they do, there is intense overcrowding. With so many animals in one place, disease and infection spread quickly, causing thousands to suffer.

Your support could allow us to fund programs that work with fair owners, in advance to create a better and safer environment. Brooke India teams will be able to train equines traders and owners to reduce the risk of injury and stress to animals during travel.

Then, during the fair, Brooke India can also offer demonstrations of good health practices and teach equine disease awareness through group activities and exercises. Brooke India trained vets can also be available to offer vital and urgent treatment to animals, like Badal, whose lives truly depend on it.

By implementing key preventive measures and offering treatment, we van ensure that more animals arrive at the fair in better condition, remain safe during the fair, and leave healthier with informed owners.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT, WE CAN HELP THESE HARDWORKING HORSES, DONKEYS AND MULES. YOU CAN REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Together we can help more than 306,000 equines at 68 Equine Fairs in India.
