About our COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund

Brooke USA has launched a crisis fundraising campaign for friends and supporters to provide humanitarian aid during the growing global fight against the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. The Board of Directors of Brooke USA will manage the COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund which is designed to address the need for humanitarian aid across the globe.

In response to the spread of the coronavirus, Brooke USA is committed to meeting the needs of equine-dependent communities impacted by the pandemic both in the United States and in the developing world. Countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and the Caribbean are going to need increased assistance.

Brooke USA recognizes that in the developing world there is a lack of health care facilities, medical supplies are not readily available, and living in highly crowded communal situations exacerbates the risk of spread. Moreover, the international community which normally offers aid is hard pressed to help because every nation is dealing with their own problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current crisis has also impacted the US, leaving horses, donkeys and mules abandoned and local equine organizations in desperate need of financial support.

COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund positions Brooke USA to immediately help where the need is greatest. Grants issued from the funds raised will be made on a rolling first come, first serve basis. As fundraising continues through the outbreak and recovery phases of the crisis, the Fund will adapt to emerging needs as the situation evolves.

Grant giving is based on available funding from Brooke USA friends and supporters.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m an individual who’s been affected by COVID-19. Can this Fund help me?
We understand many individuals and families have been affected by the outbreak already and more will continue to be affected. While Brooke USA is not able to provide grants to individuals, we are working to fund organizations based in the United States and abroad that are directly supporting people and equines who are most affected by emerging health, economic, and social impacts.

My organization is interested in funding from this Fund. Can we be considered?
We understand the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting vulnerable people and animals everywhere, and although we would like to help everyone, we must focus on alleviating the suffering of people and the equines who depend on them, all over the globe. To this end, we are accepting one-page requests for funding that detail how our funding will help both people and equines. Please send your grant application to Emily Dulin, Executive Director, at Emily.Dulin@BrookeUSA.org.

Based upon the charitable structure of the COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund, our grants are limited to 501c3 nonprofit organizations. We are not able to fund individuals or businesses directly, labor unions, or other 501c4, 501c5, and 501c6 organizations.

I want to donate. Can I restrict my funding to just the COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund?
The COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund was created in hopes of providing a way to mitigate the suffering of people and equines during the COVID-19 corona virus pandemic. All monies donated to this Fund will be used for that sole purpose.

Should I give to this Fund instead of making other donations?
The COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund was not created to be the only vehicle to provide assistance. If Brooke USA’s mission and values align with your values, please consider making a donation. However, this is a critical time for so many, so please continue to give to organizations you regularly support, and those that need your help at this crucial time. Now is the time to double down for people across the globe as we gain greater awareness of the long-term consequences on this novel corona virus.

Is there a geographic area of focus for the Fund?
Brooke USA’s Board of Directors will review grant applications and will prioritize them based on need, impact and mission synergy. We have agreed to fund those in need all over the world.

When will you share who you fund?
Brooke USA anticipates making a first round of approximately 5 grants in the coming weeks, and will publish the list of selected grantees on Brooke USA website, along with short descriptions of the services and support they are providing. We hope that this will help others as they seek help, and we hope to continue raising and granting funds to organizations in need.

Is there a fee to contribute?
With a focus on getting resources out to the community in this critical time, there is no administrative fee for participating in the Fund. 100% of donations will go to nonprofits in the need, except for credit card fees for online donations. Brooke USA is covering the cost of staff leading this effort.

How will the Fund shift gears if needed?
The COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund priorities may evolve as locally and internationally we adapt to the viral outbreaks. We will prioritize communities most impacted, recognizing the inequities that are likely to be magnified in times of crisis. Crisis philanthropy recognizes the need to provide immediate funds, as well as the importance of recovery resources to ensure global resilience.

Should my organization receive a grant from Brooke USA, what are the requirements after the fact?
Recognizing that these are difficult times for all, we are only asking that by the end of the year, you provide us with a one-page document explaining how you used our funds.
