The COVID-19 virus is no longer restricted to urban areas in India and with limited access to healthcare, the people Brooke USA serves are the ones suffering most.

 

With restrictions lifted for national elections in India during March and April, migrants returned home from city hotspots to vote. Rural communities became exposed, and the pandemic saw its second wave, stronger and harsher than ever before.

 

Professor Gopal Nath of the Virus Research and Diagnostic Lab at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, noted that “the community spread is so bad in the villages that people don’t know what to do or where to go.”

 

Rural communities across India are equine-dependent, where horses, donkeys, and mules, support daily activities paramount to survival -- toiling the land and laboring in brick kilns. Each working equine supports six people, some of the poorest on Earth.
