Brooke USA Foundation Announces Completion of

Successful Campaign Power of ONE to Raise $1 Million

Brooke USA Foundation (Brooke USA) is officially announcing the successful completion of its comprehensive philanthropic campaign, The Power of ONE. Raising $1,194,839.29 (close to $200,000 over goal), The Power of ONE was created last October to emphasize the fact that it only takes one person to have a profound impact on millions of lives—ONE by ONE. ONE gift at a time, ONE animal at a time, ONE community at a time.

More than 1,000 friends and supporters contributed to the record-breaking $1.2 million which serves to meet Brooke USA’s commitment to fund programs in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. With a focus on impacting the economic sustainability of vulnerable communities, protecting the planet, ensuring gender equality, and guaranteeing life on land resilience, the funds raised during The Power of ONE are already benefiting programs around the globe.

“Over the span of this campaign, many demonstrated their support of Brooke USA; a testament to the value that donors place on Brooke USA’s mission and work. We are ever so grateful to all those who joined our efforts,” said Katherine Kaneb, Chair of the Board of Directors of Brooke USA. “Thanks to this campaign, Brooke USA is able to continue its mission of alleviating the suffering of working horses, donkey and mules, and the people who depend on them for survival everywhere.”

“It is inspiring to see our community of donors, friends, family and supporters come together to attain the $1 million goal of The Power of ONE and make our commitments a reality, especially amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic,” said Emily Dulin, CEO of Brooke USA. “It is hard to overstate the impact these generous contributions will have on the people and animals who need it most.”

Moving forward, Brooke USA will be able to:

  • Continue its commitment to banning the import and sale of ejiao in the United States, the third largest consumer of the product in the world.
  • Establish more plots in Nicaragua to help villagers in that nation and hopefully see an expansion to other nations in Latin America.
  • Grant funds to US-based equine rescues which, due to the global pandemic, have seen a reduction in funding and an increase in horse abandonment and medical bills.
  • Support disaster prevention and citizen resilience across Africa with a pilot test in West Africa, specifically Senegal and Burkina Faso.
  • Help coal mine donkeys in Pakistan, used to fetch coal from approximately 3,000–6,000 feet below ground, working up to eight or 10 hours a day, six days a week.
  • Aid horses, donkeys, and mules in the brick kilns of India. These equines are used to transport bricks by cart under extremely harsh conditions.
  • Build two veterinary health clinics in Ethiopia which will reduce the distance owners and animals need to travel to access services.

The Power of ONE was launched to recognize the enormous value of every single donation and every single donor toward improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules, and the people they serve throughout the developing world. “We are ever so grateful to all those who supported us,” concluded Dulin.

Help Brooke USA Foundation Raise $25,000

To inspire your generosity, Lugano Diamonds is matching the first $5,000 raised.

Brooke USA has some wonderful news to share!

U.S. Representative Don Beyer (VA-8) introduced legislation (H.R. 5203 - The Ejiao Act) which amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and bans the knowing sale or transport of ejiao made using donkey skin, or products containing ejiao made using donkey skin, in interstate or foreign commerce.

Ejiao is a gelatin created from the boiled skins of millions of donkeys slaughtered annually for use in traditional Chinese cosmetic and luxury products. Unfortunately, the donkey skin trade to produce ejiao is decimating international donkey populations and aggressively harming impoverished communities, particularly in the Global South. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that the use of ejiao is unnecessary in the production of these products since the gelatins from other meats, fish, or plants may easily be used instead.

The leading importers in the world for ejiao are China and Hong Kong. However, the United States accounts for approximately $12 million in annual imports each year. Indeed, the growing sale of ejiao in the U.S. deepens the crisis affecting donkeys and the communities who rely on them for their livelihoods. Simply put, with current donkey population figures, the sale and trade of ejiao is completely unsustainable and damaging to poor communities. The United States has the power to take a stand and highlight the problems inherent in selling ejiao. H.R. 5203 is a strong, positive step forward.

Now is the time to ACT!

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With A Donation to Our Demo Plots in Nicaragua

Uri Hernández Valle, 53, lives with his wife and two children in the Ceiba Dudu community in Nicaragua. In 2019, he joined the Animal Welfare project implemented by the Association for the Diversification and Development of Communal Agriculture (ADDAC)

and financed by Brooke, where he has participated in training processes on the economic contribution of working equines and compassionate management practices in promoting animal welfare.

In July 2020, he was one of the 105 beneficiary producers of the Nicaragua demo plots program financed by Brooke USA Foundation on diversified plots, which were implemented as mitigation measures to the negative impact of COVID-19 in the area.

Don Uri, has established 200 cuttings of yucca, 60 corms of bananas, 5 grafted plants of oranges, 5 grafted plants of Tahiti lemon, 5 grafted plants of mandarin, 4 plants of passion fruit, 4 plants of granadilla, and 1 apple of Catacama improved corn.

"Before we thought only about feeding the family, today we also care about our equines. Diversified plots are a success for the whole family because we are guaranteed a varied diet, not only have they delivered the plants, but we also now understand the benefits of a good diet for all who contribute to the productive and economic development of the farm.”

You can help more than 1,000 people and 1,800 equines in Nicaragua. We are raising funds for 233 demo plots in Nicaragua. Investment in this project covers the purchase of the land; the provision of equipment like wire fencing to protect the plants from animals and theft; and the purchase of starter plants and seeds, which will come from the original participants of the pilot program.

From the ground up, this program teaches sustainability: how to grow food, how to use it, how to store it, and how to sell it. In addition, this pilot program in Nicaragua can serve as a model for expansion across the Americas. Your support of Brooke USA’s Americas Fund will help us purchase 75 more demo plots in rural communities in Nicaragua. These demo plots are used to teach and train villagers on the basics of fodder cultivation – from planting to storing food for their equines. Cost per plot is $500.

On Friday, October 1, Brooke USA Foundation’s Aiken Regional Advisory Council hosted the first annual Ponies & Pearls during the finals of the New Bridge Women’s Challenge 14 Goal Tournament. Ponies & Pearls was created to celebrate women and their accomplishments. Sonoma 2021 Gala With A Pop of Orange

A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!

On September 10, the Northern California Regional Advisory Council successfully raised $25,000 for Brooke USA Foundation during Split Rock Jumping Tour's Sonoma Gala.

The event was beautiful and introduced Brooke USA Foundation to a large number of guests who were unaware of the work Brooke USA is funding in vulnerable communities worldwide. The evening was complete with dinner and drinks, as well as a silent auction, pop of orange pashminas, a Calcutta hosted by Split Rock, and Brooke USA's Bid For A Cause. Due to the immense support, Brooke USA completed the funding for our Vet Clinic in Ethiopia, which will be constructed and staffed in the upcoming year, servicing thousands of working equines in the region.

The council continued their good works with the Sacramento International, a two-week horse show featuring our Jump For The Cause initiative. The event will conclude this weekend with the Brooke USA Young Jumpers Challenge, just before the start of the FEI World Cup.

Due to the hard work of the council chair, Melissa Klaerner, and her amazing advisory council, Brooke USA's Northern California Regional Advisory Council has raised more than $36,000 to support our global projects.

Brooke USA Presents at the American Horse Publication Equine Media Conference

Brooke USA Foundation CEO Emily Marquez-Dulin joined Board Member Dwayne Hildreth in Dallas/Ft. Worth for the American Horse Publications Equine Media Conference in Texas. During the trip, Brooke USA made a presentation about the Ejiao trade, import and the future of banning the product in the US.

We are also very excited for Aiken Regional Advisory Council Chair Katie Roth for winning first place with her New Bridge Polo Magazine in the Publishing Media Equine Related Custom Publication category.

It was a wonderful week filled with collective brainstorming, celebrations of actions in the equestrian world, and raising awareness for Brooke USA and our movement to ban the sale of Ejiao on Amazon and in the US.
