Brooke USA’s COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund
A global health pandemic like COVID-19 will be devastating to already impoverished communities.
For many of the people and animals Brooke USA serves, things will only get worse before they get better.
While you may be able to shelter safely in your home—maybe with enough food to get you through a few weeks, several bottles of soap, and clean water—the communities Brooke USA serves don’t have that luxury. Even if they have been exposed to the virus, women and their donkeys will still have to walk miles to fetch water for their families. Farmers will still need to take their mules to crowded, hot markets to sell their goods. Children will still need help from their horses to complete morning chores. None of that changes during a global health crisis. But with limited access to healthcare, lack of public information, living arrangements that don’t allow for self-quarantine or social distance, and no infrastructure for distance learning, things will get worse. When things get worse, people will fall even deeper into poverty. And, as you know, when the lives of the owners suffer, so do the lives of the equines.
This year will be a difficult one—for so many reasons—and here at Brooke USA, we are determined to do our part to help. To this end, we will continue to fundraise to support much-needed projects all over the globe. We are tightening our belts and finding ways to reduce our spending to offset projected lost revenue due to the global crisis.
The need for support in the communities Brooke USA serves has not slowed—in fact, it has increased-- and we need to ramp up our efforts from home. And so, we are preparing to do even more this year. Like you, Brooke USA is committed to improving the lives of 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules and the 600 million people who depend on them, now more than ever.

About Our COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund
Brooke USA has launched a crisis fundraising campaign for friends and supporters to provide humanitarian aid during the growing global fight against the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. The Board of Directors of Brooke USA will manage the COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund which is designed to address the need for humanitarian aid across the globe.
In response to the spread of the coronavirus, Brooke USA is committed to meeting the needs of equine-dependent communities impacted by the pandemic both in the United States and in the developing world. Countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and the Caribbean are going to need increased assistance.
Brooke USA recognizes that in the developing world there is a lack of health care facilities, medical supplies are not readily available, and living in highly crowded communal situations exacerbates the risk of spread. Moreover, the international community which normally offers aid is hard pressed to help because every nation is dealing with their own problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current crisis has also impacted the US, leaving horses, donkeys and mules abandoned and local equine organizations in desperate need of financial support.
COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund positions Brooke USA to immediately help where the need is greatest. Grants issued from the funds raised will be made on a rolling first come, first serve basis. As fundraising continues through the outbreak and recovery phases of the crisis, the Fund will adapt to emerging needs as the situation evolves.
Grant giving is based on available funding from Brooke USA friends and supporters.
